Justin Smith and Virgil Philpott (aka Isle of Wight folk singers ‘The Dollymopps’) take us on ‘La Tour de Wight’, introducing some of the most interesting characters they have encountered during a decade of researching the Island’s musical traditions.
Virgil explains: “The idea is to take a tour of the Island over the last 200 years, stopping off at multiple points along the way and introducing the audience to some of the music and characters we have come across. Like the Nineteenth Century ‘Jimi Hendrix’ who gave banjo lessons to royalty at Osborne House. Or the Ryde ballad publisher who claimed to have developed a process for making paper from seaweed. Or the respectable lady of Yarmouth, with connections to Lord Byron, who was so taken by the singing of the local gypsies that she ran off to live with them in the forest. Then there’s the world’s worst hymn writer from Newport and many more besides.”
