King Charles’ Bedroom
During Charles’s imprisonment at Carisbrooke, this room was used as his bedroom. He was moved to another, more secure, room after his first, failed, escape attempt.
Originally built in the 14th century as a ‘solar’ for the Constable of the castle, a private apartment away from the bustle of castle life, over the years it has undergone several significant changes in layout and decoration.
Most recently, in the mid-nineteenth century, the ceiling was lifted and the large window installed. In the early 20th century, it was used as Princess Beatrice’s dining room.
Please note: This exhibition is housed in an upper room which is accessible only by stairs. Unfortunately, because the castle is a listed monument it is not possible to make adaptions to provide access to upper floors for those who have difficulty managing stairs.
